GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 22nd. August, 1918.
G.a
sir,
With reference to Mr. Severn's Despatch No.
7259 380 of the 15th, December, 1917, on the subject of the widening
of Queen's Road East, I have the honour to transmit for your consideration a copy of a letter from the Unofficial Members requesting that the work be proceeded with immediately and con- -tinuously, instead of piecemeal as opportunities arise.
2.
It is estimated that this procedure will entail an expenditure of $200,000 over and above the original estimate of $100,000 which was approved in your Despatch No. 46 of the 15th. February, 1918, on this subject; but I am of the opinion that, in view of the pressing need of the Colony for further expansion and new building areas, the work is a matter of some urgency, since the road in question is one of the main arteries of traffic lending in the direction of the localities which it is proposed to open up for residential purposes.
I have now to ask for your covering authori- -ty for this expedition of the widening scheme, which will in- -volve a total expenditure of approximately $300,000 spread over the next three or four years.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
Roma
Governor,&c..
HE RIGHT HONOURABLE
WALTER LONG, K.P.,
